As digitalisation progresses, it is important for children and young people to not only adopt a digital way of thinking, but also to develop those skills that distinguish them from machines: social skills, creativity, and critical thinking. These qualities are essential in order to succeed in the digital age. If a child can’t manage their emotions or handle conflict, it doesn’t matter how adept they are at solving math problems. Fuel (https://fuel.social) is an online writing and social interaction network that empowers students to acquire reading, basic writing as well as soft skills. Users engage in fiction, nourish their imagination, and safely train for the big challenges of the social world. Schools, businesses and the public can benefit from Fuel. The current release has been designed and developed with teachers and students of primary, secondary and high school level in mind. After logging in to Fuel, students enter into a fictional world which they primarily experience and shape through the eyes of different characters. They are presented with short scenes from screenplays. Each scene leads to an exchange of dialogue between two characters and suddenly ends when it gets interesting. Students then continue the scenes by taking on the role of a character and by interacting with other members of their group. With Fuel, students build their emotional intelligence and social skills through dialogue. They are encouraged to anticipate and understand the feelings, thoughts and intentions of other characters, and to react accordingly. The changing of perspectives also fosters creativity and sharpens critical thinking. — Regarding the web link below: The presentation video is currently only available in German, but the basic principles of interaction can easily be inferred without the audio commentary. Also, the attached PDF only contains an article written in German.

While most ed-tech companies focus on science, technology, engineering, and math – also known as STEM education – or on offering learning management systems, Fuel is re-thinking the way students receive a literary education. The collaborative setting creates a captivating experience for students to build up soft skills and competences in ESD, e.g. change perspectives, anticipate, reflect on values. Furthermore, students can interact anywhere, in real-time or in a time-delayed fashion to acquire reading and basic writing skills in an exciting and creative manner. Unlike most other apps or digital teaching aids, Fuel does neither alter the role nor importance of a teacher. It merely adapts the book to the possibilities of the digital age, thereby taking up a core concern of traditional literary education. Furthermore, Fuel combines tasks of media education with various forms of digital teaching. Fuel is also easy to use for both teachers and students.

Fuel is an online writing and social interaction network. On Fuel, the names, email addresses, and passwords are stored encrypted in the database, and the transmission of all information between the browser and the web server is protected by the SSL protocol (Secure Sockets Layer).

Teachers work individually with their classes of around 20 students. There is no limit to the number of teachers who can open an account on Fuel.

Various teachers of German-speaking Switzerland and Germany use Fuel on a regular basis.

Our current focus is on the DACH-region, but our near-term goal is for Fuel to be used in English-, Italian-, and French-speaking regions as well.
